Your Questions About Memory Health Food

Mark asks…
What food or health supplements are good for improving your memory?

Brian answers:
Ginkgo Biloba is excellent. I have heard great things about the combination of Ginkgo Biloba, Vitamin B-6 Complex, and Lecithin. Siberian Ginseng, and Omega 3 Fish Oil is good also.

Sandra asks…
What kind of food is better for mental health?
Iam suffering frm OCD,ADHD and memory loss, mind sluggishness. What kind of food is better for making my mind reliable, fresh and sharp and increasing concentrating power..!

Brian answers:
Anything with omega 3s will help your mind, especially fish, eat in moderation weekly. Superfruits like blueberries are very good, anything purple. Green tea is good. Saturated fats will keep you sluggish, like breads, fast foods, junk food. Keep on the healthy track and you will feel better. Get some exercise as well that will also help.
Good for you, alot of people make them selves worse by smoking pot and drinking and their minds just deminish. Keep up the good work. Try reading as much as you can and do things to retain memory like try to memorize license plates #s when you randomly see them , look at them for a second and try to remember it for as long as you can, also try to notice the color of the color of the car,etc along with it, it just helps jog your memory. Try not to get frustrated just keep on it. Do word puzzles, etc. There are certain electronic games out there that are for memory practices too.

Michael asks…
Instead of eating health food, why can’t I keep eating my normal diet with a multi vitamin?
I normally eat around 2500 calories in a day, and I’m not overweight. I do, however, eat a lot of “empty calorie foods” like bagels, muffins, noodles, low fat tortilla chips, grilled cheese sandwiches, bean burritos, etc, and I take a multi vitamin and a calcium supplement daily to make up for it.
A recent day for me included the following:
Breakfast: 2 muffins (800 cal)
Lunch: 1 Taco Bell bean burrito & coke (500 cal)
Dinner: Spaghetti dinner (1000 cal)
Total Calories, approx. 2300 + multi vitamin.
A health nut I know recently got on me for this, and said the multi vitamin doesn’t make up for eating empty calorie foods. She said to start eating more naturally healthy things like vegetables, fish, etc. She gave me an explanation as to why, but it sounded bogus and I purged it from my memory as know-it-all health club babble.
My question is what is wrong with eating my normal diet, provided I’m already in shape and not over eating, keeping everything in moderation, and taking a multi vitamin? How is eating stereotypical health foods like kale, cauliflower, and salmon better for you (if it even is)?
A little more info:
1. I stay away from foods that are considered nutritional suicide, like doughnuts, french fries. I just don’t eat uber nutritious things like broccoli and kale on a regular basis unless they are mixed in with a dish, so I guess I’m somewhere in the middle.
2. I exercise regularly.
Thanks for the input so far.

Brian answers:
In order to keep your heart, brain, and other organs working well you need nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. While vitamins can provide some nutrients, the best form to get them from is natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc.

Joseph asks…
Is there any food or supplement you have used to improve your overall health?
How do you know it improved your health? Did test results change or your memory improve or you just feel better? Please give us details & tell us if you use this still or if it was temporary & how long you did this. Also, if you know of any precautions, and any other details that might help others. thank you!

Brian answers:
First I take Omega 3 fish oil because my family has a history of Alzheimer and my husband psychiatrists say no proof yet but many doctors are taking it because it does have some promise. Now for my ache knees, I take a supplement call fluid joint. It comes in a cream that you can rub on and in pills that you take daily. The cream smells like Ben Gay, but takes away pain immediately and the pills, well without them, my knees hurt a lot and with them I can continue to bicycle daily.

George asks…
what type of food is good for memory problem ladies at the age of 50.?
if anybody suffering with emotional problems what type of liquids are good for health?

Brian answers:
Low fat diet walk for exercise.
Take anti-oxidant supplements, e.g. Vit. C and e.
Pomegranate or blueberry juice is good. Green tea is good. 1 gram of cinnamon per day is excellent. 3 or 4 grams of dark semi-sweet chocolate per day is good. Ginko biloba supplements are advised for memory. Folic acid B6 (a little), & b12 are good. Limit refined sugars and white bleached wheat flour intake. Do mental exercise.
Anti-depressent medication actually enlarge the Brain’s hippocampus area (which is invoved in short term memory. (e.g. Zoloft, paxil, luvox, celebrex, and prozac etc.). Depression shrinks the hippocampus area. But prompt treatmrent can reverse that trend. Mental exercise helps. (e.g. Crossword puzzles, sudoku, vocabulary tests and study, chess, bridge )

Please do not delay consulting your physician.
“No head injury is as silly as to be ignored and none as serious as to be despaired of” is the quote of a neurologist.
