Tests For Alzheimer's Disease

If your parent had alzheimer’s disease, would you want to be tested for its only known marker, the APOE allele?

My sister says no, but I want to know the enemy I may face so I KNOW and can plan ahead.

Plan ahead for what? Which nursing home you want to be in? Making a choice like that for the future certainly isn’t smart since no telling what it could be like by the time you get there. Money for ‘your old age’. Well reguardless of your mental status you will need money so start working on that now anyway. You don’t need genetic testing to tell you that…do you? My grandmother had Alzheimer’s and my parents are both well in their 70’s now. They are fine … for 70. There is no cure yet, so why bother. You also need to do some more research on this genetic test. I don’t think you totally understand the results.
“It is important to note that people with the APOE e4 allele inherit an increased risk of developing Alzheimer disease, not the disease itself. Not all people with Alzheimer disease have the APOE e4 allele, and not all people who have this allele will develop the disease.”
