How to Keep From Forgetting Your Anniversary

There is something about men that make them forget anniversaries almost every time.  It is not because we see it as less important but, in all honesty, this weak point of ours is something that is quite difficult to explain.  So, instead of searching for the root cause why such deficiency is present in men, why don’t we just find ways on how to cure this disease that women tend to hate – another issue that we seem to find quite difficult to comprehend.

If you are someone who just got married or someone who just reached your first year with your girlfriend and you see yourself together for a very long time, and you don’t want to ever commit this mortal sin, I commend you for finding ways and taking the initiative.

If you have been married for quite some time and you keep on forgetting your anniversary, I can only tell you this:  You are too lazy!  With all the tools that you can use around you these days, there is actually no reason for you to forget that very special day in your married life.  It’s totally unacceptable.  However, I give you an approval pat in the back for finally taking a step forward and looking for ways on how you can finally not make the same mistake.

Whether you are the forgetful culprit or someone who is being proactive, you have clicked the right link.  What I am about to share with you are ways that will successfully keep you away from forgetting your anniversary.

As I have mentioned earlier, with all the tools around you, forgetting your anniversary can be something considered as unacceptable.  How to keep from forgetting your anniversary is actually made easy these days.  Here are simple ways on how to keep you from forgetting.

Mark the Date

You surely have a day planner or a personal organizer.  And you most likely have a calendar in your office.  Mark the exact date of your anniversary and the date a week before your anniversary.  The moment you see the “a week before” mark on your calendar or in your day planner or personal organizer, you will eventually have a head’s up.  You can actually buy a present on that day so that you won’t have to cram on the day itself.  Mark the days of your calendars as days pass.  Place your present on your table or your personal drawer at the office so that you will always be reminded of the very special day.

Set Your Electronic Reminders

These are the tools that I’ve been talking about.  In your Facebook account, there is an

“Event” application.  Your phone has a calendar reminder.  Your e-mail has one too!  There are even softwares that are dedicated for reminding!  You can easily download one and just set a reminder or two in every electronic gadget you have.  With too many mediums reminding you about this very special day you ought to celebrate with your better half, there will be no possible way to forget.  Not unless you get into a car accident and acquire amnesia or you get diagnosed with Alzheimer’s a few weeks before your anniversary (which I hope won’t happen at all), there is no way for you to forget your anniversary with the help of these reliable, electronic devices.

Place Phone Calls in Advance

As early as today, call the nearest flower shop and tell them to send flowers to your better half on the day of your anniversary.  Then place another call, at your favorite gift shop and buy an anniversary gift that will also be delivered on the day of your anniversary.  Lastly, place a phone call on your favorite restaurant and tell them to reserve a table for two on the day of your anniversary and remind them to give you a call on that day.  This way, even if you forget, if won’t look so, since, flowers and a beautiful present will land in your better half’s hands plus you have a restaurant reservation to go to.

Memory Improvement: Mnemonics

Mnemonics is great for memory improvement. They’re memory tools used for remembering pieces of information. The brain can interpret a whole mass of different stimuli, from sounds and smells to emotions and language. However, certain data is harder to remember than other pieces due to the way it’s presented.

Coding Information

By coding information through mnemonics it’s possible to improve memory. The data is coded by using a striking mental image in such a way that both the information itself and the structure of it can be recalled. By making it striking you should be able to remember it far more easily. Some memory improvement techniques include:

* Using a positive image because often the brain attempts to obscure nasty ones.
* Try and use as many senses as possible: smell, taste, sound, touch as well as movement and emotion.
* Make the image three dimensional in the sense of using movement, position and space. Movement in particular can be used to recall actions or a flow of associated ideas.
* Make important features of the information more exaggerated.
* Humor’s a great technique in terms for memory improvement.
* Signs and symbols are good memory tools due to their well known associations.

Designing Mnemonics

There are three main ideas behind creating your own mnemonic for

Memory Improvement:

* Imagination: in order to create the associations needed to recall the information you require imagination. The more clearly you’re able to visualize and the stronger the connection you feel to it, the easier it’ll be to recall it later.

* Association: this is the way in which you make image relevant to the data you’re trying to remember.

Methods To Do That Include:

* crash images together or place them over each other;

* merge images or wrap them together;

* have them so they rotate or move together in some way;

* Or link them using different senses.

* Location: by having a location you can store the information in a particular space. It also allows you to keep certain pieces of data separate from other pieces so that they can be organized more clearly in your mind.

Types of Mnemonics:

There are different types of mnemonics which you can use for memory improvement as well as images:

* create a sentence which uses the first letter of each word you need to remember;
* create acronyms by using the first letter of words can create one new word;
* write the information into a rhyme;
* make a joke by figuring out what’s funny about a certain fact or idea;
* organize certain pieces of information together;
* Or associate a piece of data with a specific landmark or place.
Anyone is capable of memory improvement. With the right memory improvement techniques, it is possible to store and recall information from your brain quite easily.

Self-Improvement 101 – Mind Control Techniques

By Gregory Frost

The pertinence of self-improvement has come to the forefront of the modern society. Never has there been so much interest in unlocking potentials and freeing the talents within – especially when the combination of science and urban rhetoric has the world convinced that all we need is some consumer level mind control techniques to unlock the superman or woman within us. Gladly, it is not a legend, myth or a yarn spun around a table. The facts remain that it is true – we as a human race are not utilising the full set of tools that evolution and experience has given to us.

Psychologists put this down to our developmental stage of our life, when the conscious and subconscious are within similar planar and neurological states. Laymen would translate this to – the sub conscious brain and the conscious brain during the developmental stages of the brain and its mental faculties are left open to many persuasions that can decide either fate – a stunted or full growth of all the available talents within its pre and conscious state. Unfortunately, we are not armed with the tools necessary to ensure that we get the full benefit of our brainpower.

Most of us are either borne with some gifts over others, or sometimes none at all – which distinct us as very normal human beings, with normal mental capabilities. Herein lies the problem. Popular definition would say that we are normal but what psychology and neurology has shown – we are actually running quite below capacity. What we need is some mind control techniques to free the shackles of the mind and unfortunately, as well, we have no easy access to meditation or hypnosis – the then popular methods of unlocking the subconscious mind and invoking our inherent powers. The personal development industry has been working closely with science and its developments, especially in the field of brainwave entrainment and autogenics.

From dream machine to compact disc, this has propagated into various types of technology that include the subliminal CD and binaural beats. First released as a hesitant move into self alteration, now it is the meteor that leads the fire spreading within modern global societies. Now we have the power to have full control over our minds, and call upon latent gifts that we can utilise to give us and edge in life and in the things that we do. Learn faster, think better, focus like you have never before and be the puppet master to your body and call upon physical abilities that you have never thought possible.

That is the power of such mind control techniques and now; there are available off the shelf, on the internet, around the corner. Packaged most popular as CD’s, all you need to do is find a quiet corner and surrender your mind to the tailor made embedded messages and stimulations, gain access to your sub conscious mind and reprogram the very core of your spirit, soul, soma, sarx. The power is in your hands, and it is time to grasp it!

We Need a Global Consortium for Brain Fitness and Training Innovation

Copyright (c) 2008 SharpBrains

The World Economic Forum asked me to write “an 800 words summary of your most compelling actionable idea on the challenges of aging and gerontology”, in preparation for the Inaugural Summit of the Global Agenda taking place November 7 to 9th in Dubai.

Here you have my proposal to create a Global Consortium for Brain Fitness and Training Innovation and help ensure that “No Brain is Left Behind”:

I. The Context

- Growing Demands on Our Brains: Picture 6.7 billion Primitive Brains inhabiting a Knowledge Society where lifelong learning and mastering constant change in complex environments are critical for productive work, health and personal fulfillment.

Welcome to Planet Earth, 2008.

- Further stretched by increased longevity: Now picture close to 1 billion of those brains over the age of 60 – and please remember that, less than 100 years ago, life expectancy was between 30 to 40 years. The rapidly evolving Knowledge Society is placing new and enormous demands on our “primitive” human brains. And the longer our lifespans, the more obvious the “cognitive gap”. Hence, from a health point of view, the growing prevalence of Alzheimer’s Disease and its precursor Mild Cognitive Impairment. And, from a workplace point of view, the perception that older workers can’t learn new tricks, and are to be substituted by younger employees as soon as practical.

- Significance of lifelong neuroplasticity: The good news is that substantive brain research is showing how our brains retain lifelong neuroplasticity (the ability of our brains to rewire themselves responding to experience), how they can physically be strengthened -via the Cognitive/ Brain Reserve- and its functions enhanced, opening the way to slow-down if not reverse the cognitive decline that often comes with age. Use it and Improve It may be more accurate than Use It or Lose It, and help close the growing cognitive gap. Humans can become the gardeners of our own brains by focusing on four pillars: a balanced diet, cardiovascular physical exercise, stress management and brain exercise that incorporates well-directed novelty, variety and challenge.

- Cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology are ready to step up: a growing number of research-based frameworks and applications present clear mainstream opportunities, yet they are often misunderstood, since they are presented in fragmentary and confusing ways. Think about the potential for having an annual “mental check-up” that helps set up a baseline and identify appropriate interventions. Think about being able to pinpoint specific needs and enhance, in non-invasive ways, specific neurocognitive functions, such as visual and auditory processing speed, working memory, executive functions, emotional self-regulation, attention.

II. The Problem

- We need bridges: There seems to be multiple areas of disconnect between gerontology, preventive healthcare overall, cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology. Innovative and collaborative partnerships will be required to transform the growing amount of mainstream interest and research findings into a rational, interdisciplinary, and sustainable approach to neurocognitive fitness.

- Growing confusion among consumers and professionals: there are no “magic pills” or “general solutions”, but very useful tools when used appropriately. Better assessments, taxonomies and integrated research efforts are required for the field to mature. Some brain functions tend to improve as we age, whereas some tend to decline. For example, as executives tackle many difficult situations over time, we grow an “intuition” (or crystallized pattern-recognition) for best approaches. As long as the environment does not change too rapidly, we can continue to accumulate wisdom. But some areas of mental functioning typically decline. We usually see this in areas that test our capacity to learn and adapt to new environments, such as effortful problem-solving in novel situations, processing speed, working memory, and attention. Research has shown that all these areas can be enhanced in older brains. But the priorities are not the same for all individuals, or for all objectives (safer driving, preventing Alzheimer’s symptoms, improving memory…) In summary, the field holds much promise, but the picture is complicated.

III. The Opportunity

- A Global Consortium for Brain Fitness and Training Innovation composed of 100 leading universities, policy-makers, healthcare/ insurance providers and developers of technology-based neurocognitive assessments and training tools can provide the taxonomy, guidance and structure required to guide applications of cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology in gerontology and geriatrics -and healthcare overall.

- A transparent online presence could facilitate the engagement of professionals and the public at large. Especially, yes, of brains over 60.

- Outcomes:

1) Best practices: to share best practices in preventive brain health education, seniors housing, hospital-based programs, insurance-led initiatives, public policy efforts.

2) Standards: to define standards for neurocognitive assessments and training tools,

3) Taxonomy: to establish a common taxonomy and language,

4) Education: to engage professionals and the public at large in well-informed “brain maintenance”,

5) Policy readiness: to anticipate policy implications and improve readiness,

6) Research path: to propose a research and applications path.
