Unfortunately the English language is one of the toughest to master with regards to spelling. This is mainly due to the large number of words which have been brought in from other languages and the existence of exceptions to the normal rules established over the years. In English, there over 1,100 ways in which to spell 44 sound types, this accounts for the difficulty of mastering the spelling of different words. However, there are certain rules that you can follow to better your spelling expertise.
One rule is to read as much as you possibly can. This is the most effective way to master the spelling of English words because every time you see a word your memory of its spelling improves. This is because spelling has to do with how a word appears on the page. Of course, you need to ensure that what you are looking at is using the correct spelling.
To supplement the effect of reading often, you can write down in a notebook any words that you have difficulty remembering. Instead of reading a list of the commonly misspelled words, you will have your own list that is distinctly tailored to your needs.
Because spelling is nothing but than memory work, another helpful way to improve your spelling is to employ mnemonics, which are strategies to help your memory. Mnemonics use images and patterns as a memory aid.
Meanwhile, writing is another way to commit the spelling of a word to your memory. Using words that you have added to your notebook, build sentences to make it easier for your brain to retain the proper spelling of those words. However, unlike reading books, there is a danger in writing. You may commit to memory the wrong spelling. To avoid this issue, which could be difficult to counteract later on, you should ensure that each word you write is spelt correctly. One way to do this is with a spell checker, an alternative method is to ask another person to read through what you have written.
Lastly, you need to become competent in the basic rules of spelling, for instance placing the letter “i” before “e” except when they are found after the letter “c.” Once again, this is just memory work and enhancement can only be achieved through persistent practice.
