Elephantine Memory and Mindmapping

An important feature of any learning is memory. Without it all learning is futile. Some have razor sharp memory, but others have average to poor memory. Memory can be improved vastly by using some of the memory techniques.

1. Any new learning can be grasped faster by associating the new information with any acquired learning. This helps to see the possible connection and lends greater meaning and significance to the information learnt.

2. Studies have revealed that memory improves by using both sides of the brain. This is whole-brain thinking. The attributes of the left side of the brain are logic, words, lists, numbers, sequences and analysis, and for the right side it is rhythm, imagination, daydreaming, color, size and spatial awareness. Working on using both these elements will strengthen memory.

3. The most common problem of memory is lack of proper attention. .

4. You can picture the information you want to remember in a sequence and the more bizarre, humorous and inflated the images, the greater the recall.

5. Main ideas or information can be strung into an unusual story. You can remember a long series of information by spinning a story out of it.

6. Acronym, which is taking a word out of each item to be recalled, is an effective method way for remembering information in an order by. E.g. My Very Elegant Mother Just Served Us Nine Peas – represent 9 planets of the sun – Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

7. Using the first letter of each item that stands for a word in a phrase is Acrostic. Eg. Pink = Pink is a special color; I like it more for its subtle shade, Never loud or garish; Kind of gentle and pleasing always.

8. Chunking is an effective method often used in numbers. A 12-digit number can be split in 2 units of 6 each for easy recalling. E.g. number 982615947502 can be cut into two units of 982615 – 947502. You can also chunk items under different concepts such as – fruits, vegetables, animals, etc.

An equally powerful and easy technique for reinforcing learning and memory is Mind Mapping. Mindmapping technique is primarily based on how we think, remember and recall.

It induces whole-brain thinking by kindling a chain of associated thoughts and ideas. It draws your full and focused attention and adopts visual stimuli such as colors, pictures, symbols, dimensions, etc., creating vividness, and strengthening recalling abilities.

The Mind Map technique has the potential to trigger greater creativity, imagination and insight. You have to experience the technique to realize its true value.

Mind Tools Management

Money Management At Its Best and How You Can Benefit

Would you like to know the very basic principle that millionaires live by? That’s right, managing their money. And it runs on such a simple principle that it is a wonder there are not more of these people out there.

What is the strongest muscle in the body. I would argue that it is not in your legs. (Doctors are excluded from this test.) It is your brain! OK, technically it is not a muscle; it’s an organ. But when we speak of money, believe me, the brain is a muscle.

I’m sure you have heard the expression “Time is money.” Well, I say to you, “Your “mind is money.” In fact, isn’t that why you need to get a college education to be valuable to an employer?

I would even argue (ok, that not such a positive word. How about proclaim?) that anyone who ever made any money in this life, it was because he put his mind to it and made a way.

Think of it this way. Have you heard of those who have inherited a large amount of money, only to loose it quickly. That is because their mind was not providing the will and knowledge to make the money work for them. Quite the opposite. The money deceived them into wasting it.

You could have all the material that Michael Angelo had, but not produce even close to what he did if you do not use your mind to find a way to use those tools to your advantage. Granted, some things come easier to some people, but there are just as many people out there who have worked hard at making what they have to their advantage.

That is why you need to know and set your mind to managing your money and not letting your money manage you.

Lets turn it around. The reason you probably do not keep a budget with your money is because your mind is telling you that it does not like the effort involved, and that pleasure now is more important than comfort later.

And there are great budget programs out there that are benefiting people immensely, but the only reason you are not benefiting from it is because you are not putting your mind to getting past the little bit of inconvenience to use this great tool to your advantage. And believe me, there are great advantages that can come from keeping a budget.

One advantage is you can get insight into what you are spending your money on, and how much it will cost you in the long run, if you are using credit.

Another advantage is you can have a view of your future benefits that will inspire you to the point where you could actually enjoy keeping a budget. And Money management is centered on your ability to keep a budget.

Memory Exercises Tree List

Three Memory Techniques to Help you Learn a Foreign Language

Learning a new language can be a difficult task. But if you use these simple memory exercises/techniques you could be start learning a new language in no time.

Memory technique A: The One Hundred Words

There’s not a lot to say about this particular technique. I know it works for me. The idea is that you only need a 100 strong words to cover over 50% of all words used in a conversation. By learning those 100 strong words you are one step ahead in speaking a new language or at least perform a basic conversation.

But what are those 100 strong words? It depends on the language and yourself. It’s up to you to decide on the strong words since each individual uses and/or is affected by words in a unique way. You can create a list of words and keep adding words to the list. Start with the ten first numbers from one to ten. Then add words you use very often. You must find the hundred top words of your everyday vocabulary.

After you’ve finished your word list in your native language write down the words from the foreign language next to the words from your native language. Exercise on learning/memorizing the new words and you will notice significant improvement in the way you talk to others using the foreign language.

Memory technique B: The Mnemonics

The idea behind this technique is to use images to link words between your native language and the foreign language. What you do is to associate all words with images in your mind. Then you start linking words by connecting images and create new.

Here’s an example of how to create images of words in your mind:

You want to learn the Greek word for the English word “Eagle”. First you imagine an eagle opening its huge wings and flying over the mountains. After creating that image in your mind its time to look at the Greek word which in this case is “Aetos”. When you read/say the Greek word, try to picture the same image in your brain, the one of the eagle flying through the clouds. That way your brain will instantly create a connection between the new word and the image of the eagle. This technique will help you learn and remember new words effectively and easily.

Memory Technique C: The Environment Mnemonic

This method is quite sophisticated and is based on the fact that the basic vocabulary of every language is somehow connected/linked to everyday things in your environment (You should define your environment, whether it is a room, a house, a village, a city etc). You should start with a place/location you are familiar with. The idea is to start connecting words with objects/locations in your environment.

For example you could associate in your mind the word “Library” with an image of the local library and the word “Book” with images of the books inside the library. You could associate the word “Park” with a park in your town and the word “Tree” with the trees in the park.

This method is so fun and easy when trying to create phrases by using a combination of the above memory techniques. You could easily create an image of a phrase like this one “..I went to the local library to get a book and then I went to the park to read the book..”.

The vast movement towards elearning is motivated by the extensive advantages that it offers to both the students and the professionals.

Elearning websites are a boon to this stressed out generation. Gen Z is turning to the Internet for help in learning and study support. New innovative websites are providing digital teaching aids to improve the teaching process. Various learning tools like Mind Maps, SLMs, Live Class, and Test Centre are making it easier for the students to study, comprehend and grasp intricate topics with considerable ease.

Mind Maps for students are important study tools as they augment the learning procedure and makes studying and understanding complex topics easier. These are graphical representational tools, which can be used to organize complex concepts through association and diagrams using key words. These simplify the learning method as our mind has a power to retain better through graphic and visual association.

Our brain functions best when it compares, integrates and synthesizes what is shown to it. It associates every word with an image or a concept. The mind forms associations almost instantaneously, and “mapping” allows you to write your ideas quicker than expressing them using only words or phrases. Various studies have proved that thinking visually improves our memorizing potential. These infact improve our creativity and foster innovative thinking pattern.

Mind Maps give an overview of large subject thus making memorizing the key points better. Through this tool, a picture gets embossed on our minds, thus, making it easier to recall. It becomes easier for the students to remember large amount of information through remembering a concise, but descriptive Mind Map. Due to their aesthetic appeal, students find them easier to recall, enjoyable to look at and study. Their attractive layout catches the eye and retains our attention, which makes it all the more easy to remember them.

Other than Mind Maps, Smart Learning Modules also facilitate learning. They aim to simplify the subject and reinforce understanding with the help of various graphics, animations and presentations. The chapters are explained using these methods, which aid in increasing the student’s attention and the subsequent retention powers. The contents are mapped as per class; subject and chapter that in turn form an immense help for a systematic study program.

Live Classroom imitates a classroom, which means that classes take place in real-time and connect the subject experts and students through the Internet. Students can solve their queries and interact with online tutors who are available 24×7.

In addition, Test Center is another pivotal feature of online learning. It comprises of previous years solved board papers, model test papers and practice papers to name a few. This exhaustive bank of questions help the students in assessing their concepts by taking regular tests and thus makes them more confident in facing the exams.
