Simple Does GED Division
To get a student to remember how to do long division you should teach a mnemonic on the order of the steps. My students have come up with a few. Each student should choose one that is easiest for them to remember. Simple, my friend, who is studying for the GED likes to keep things simple
Mnemonics for remembering the order of operations in long division:
Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring-down mnemonics
Dad, Mom, Sister, and Brother
Dracula Must Suck Blood
Dead Monkeys Smell Bad
Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down, Redo (all steps), Check (by multiplying the quotient – plus any remainder times the divisor) mnemonic.
Daddy, Mother, Sister, Brother, Reunion, Celebration
Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Check that the divisor is larger than your remainder, Bring down the next number, and Start all over again mnemonic.
Does McDonald’s Sell Cheese Burgers and Shakes?
Here’s a demonstration of long division with Does McDonald’s Sell Cheese Burgers and Shakes mnemonic.
25068 ÷ 4 = 6267 as the answer
6 (25 – 24 = 1068)
2 (10 – 8 = 268)
6 (26 – 24 = 28)
7 (28 – 28) = 0
when less than divisor and greater than 0
.
quotient is 6267.
divisor is 4
dividend is 25068
remainder is 0 in this problem
To check if the division is correct 6267 X 4 + 0 = 25068.
25069 ÷ 4 = 6267 as the answer
6 (25 – 24 = 1068)
2 (10 – 8 = 268)
6 (26 – 24 = 28)
7 (29 – 28) = 1
when less than divisor and greater than 0
.
2 (10 – 8 = 20)
5 (20 – 20 = 0)
quotient is 6267.25
divisor is 4
dividend is 25069
remainder is 0 in this problem
To check if the division is correct 6267 X 4 + 0 = 25069.
Simple hates to be bamboozled so he takes things step by step. If there is an easy way he will take it! Complex and difficult are easier when approached by taking a small step and then another one in their solution. Just because the Romans used I, II, III, and IV as numbers doesn’t mean simple won’t use 1, 2, 3, and 4.
“The complex is reached by a series of simple steps.” That’s what Simple says.
