Short Term Memory Loss Elderly
Carotid Artery Sugery on elderly man?
My father is elderly he is 76 and has had 3 bypass sugery’s. He had a very hard time with his 3rd bypass and almost didn’t make it. He doesnt do well under ansethesia it affects his mind. I am worried about him having this procedure, I talked with his doctor and the vascular sugeron but I am still not convinced, they just dismiss the hard time he had with his last sugery, but he went through a big ordeal was totally out of it for 2 weeks with 24hr sitters and in rehab 8 weeks not only for the sugery but for complications due to lack of oxygen during sugery. He was left with short term memory loss and some problems with his congnitive thinking. I want what is best for him but I am not sure this is it. I am afraid it will only make things worse when he goes back under for sugery. Does anyone have any suggestions.
the person you really need to talk to is the anesthesiologist– especially if your dad had problems with anesthesia. a carotid surgery really is quite a minor surgery (as far as recovery and all) and most people are out of the hospital the next day. you have to weigh it with the risks– they do this surgery to try to prevent a stroke from clot pieces breaking off and going to the brain. i know you’re worried, but think of the risks of a major stroke and how long rehab/hospitalization would be then. good luck.
