Memory Loss May Not Necessarily Be Due To Old Age

Memory loss may be short term or long term. Memory lapses are a normal part of ageing for most people and are not necessarily an ominous sign of mental deterioration.

There are three stages in the memory process:

 * Input – new data enters your brain via neuronal pathways
 * Storage – the data or information is stored in the brain
 * Recall – information is retrieve from your brain when required.

A normal memory loss is basically forgetfulness. Sometimes we may forget:

 * where we have left the keys or reading glasses.

 * the name of a person or place.

 * a face, although we may know the name.

 * the reason why we are at a place (why am I here?).

 * an appointment, unless we remember to put it in the diary.

Forgetfulness is not a serious health problem but it can be rather embarrassing if we keep forgetting a person’s name.

There are several ways to prevent normal loss of memory or forgetfulness. They include:

 * Eating a healthy diet. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.

 * Maintaining a healthy weight.

 * Meditating to reduce your stress level and improve concentration

 * Getting sufficient and regular exercise.

 * Drinking alcohol in moderation.

 * Don’t smoke.

 * Learning new skills to stimulate the brain

 * Playing memory games

Like all organs, in order to work properly the brain needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients that is provided by the blood.

Dementia

Dementia is a syndrome that is associated with an ongoing decline of the brain which affects thinking, speech, memory, understanding and judgment. Dementia usually affects people who are 65 or over.

It’s important to know what dementia symptoms to look for in older people. Knowing what dementia symptoms to look out for will help you seek medical advice before it gets worse.

Alzheimer’s Disease

Memory loss that disrupts daily life is not a typical part of ageing. It may be a symptom of Alzheimer’s disease, a fatal brain disease that causes a slow decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills.

Lapses of memory are more common with older people, probably due to their lapses of focus and concentration. A change in their lifestyles and social interaction can usually help to fix this matter.
