Learning Improvement
How can I teach someone who is 10, making him understand and at the same time enjoy learning?
I need help with teaching Maths, English and Science. It will be great if you know any websites that will help but do not need a subscribtion fee or any general tips and ideas you may have will be great. I’m desprate. He has huge exams coming up in about 6 months and he needs a drastic improvement.
Help
Thank You
The bbc revisewise site is good, and there is another very good one at www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk
A good tip though is not to put on too much pressure – you and I know that SATs are important, but I wouldn’t describe them as ‘huge exams’ – I know from my own teaching experience that piling on too much pressure is counter-productive and not motivational to most children. It could be that he has a block because he already feels like he is unsuccessful – give him the opportunity to work through the things he is confident in first.
The best books to get at this stage are the CGP Key Stage 2 study guides – he may already have these from school, for English, Maths and Science – work through these with him, the kids really like them and they contain everything they need, particularly for maths and science.
For literacy, you need to practise a lot of reading comprehension with him, and for the writing he needs to be able to write a short piece in 20 minutes including planning, and a longer piece in 45 minutes including planning. You will get the best results if you teach writing to a V.C.O.P approach (e-mail me if you want to know more about this.)
Good luck!
