diagnosed with it and soon died after a couple years. She lived alone
and was an avid painter and a golfer. First she forget where her house
was when driving home. Then it came to putting her in a home, where we
hung her paintings and she did not even remember that she was the one
that had painted them.  At one time in her live she hit a hole in one
while playing golf  and soon did not even remember being a golfer.
When going to visit her in the home, we were unsure if she would
remember us or not, some times she would, and other times she would
not.  It is a very emotional thing to have to go through for the loved
ones around a Alzheimer patient.  Our family is now doing everything
we can to prevent Alzheimer disease to happening to anyone else in our
family. It may not be possible to completely prevent memory lapses, but you
can hold on to a quick and sharp mind as you get older. Scientist are
finding that brains can actually repair themselves. By doing studies,
they have found that the more you use your brain, the more active your
mind becomes.  The more active your mind becomes, the healthier you
become. Scientist did a study from ages 20 to 70.  With practice they found
that 70 year olds did just as well as the 20 year olds. They found
that by stimulating your mind, you preserve your memory. Scientist say
your brain is like a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it
becomes. Other research found that the more you use your brain, the less
chances of getting Alzheimer disease. They discovered that people with
less than an eighth grade education had twice the risk of developing
Alzheimer than those with a formal education. They found this group of
people are just not exercising their brain enough. By keeping your body physically active you get more blood flow to the
brain. By keeping your brain constantly learning, you get less
diseases.  Your mind will benefit from an active social life. Playing
games, doing crossword puzzles, learning new things, like a computer,
new technology and having stimulating conversations. By doing this you
will find that not only do you enjoy your life more, but that you also
have more energy. Your brain also needs to relax, it can not always be wound up to tight
or it kills off brain cells.  Meditating twenty to sixty minutes a day
will also make your brain sharper and relieve stress. Stress is the
leading cause of mental deterioration as you age. Stress can kill off
valuable cells in your body as well as in your brain. Do not hold
things in, talk about them with a loved one or close friend.  Focus on
your breathing, by taking in some deep breaths you can relax. Build your brain power, fight against Alzheimer disease and continue
to stay physically fit and challenge your brain every day. Do this and
you will be able to enjoy your life to the fullest.

For example, when you have a sprained ankle or other body part, you might remember ICE. This stands for ice, compression, elevation. If you can remember the word and letters, its easy to come up with the proper steps to take.

In the case of a wound, you might remember PCC – pressure, clean, cover. You can even make up your own Mnemonics as long as you can make it easy to remember when first aid becomes nessasary.

Practice, Practice, Practice

It sounds dull, but the simplest way to remember first aid procedures is to practice them often. Perhaps you can review your first aid class notes or books once a week to keep the steps fresh in your mind, for example. Sometimes you may even want to hook up with a friend and go over the first aid procedures that you have already learned. Make sure to keep your first aid certification up to date as well.

If you took a first aid class, it might not be a bad idea to go over your quizzes again and again until you have them memorized. There are alot of tests you can take online to aid you training for first aid certification.

Keep a Manual Around

When your mind goes blank on first aid procedures during an actual emergency, you might want to have a first aid book easily available. This book should be simple to flip through to find what you need – tabbed books are best. It might seem a little overwhelming at first. Having a first aid book nearby will help you stay focused and relaxed. Make sure that your book is up to date on the latest advice and that its copyright date is no older than a few years back from the current year.

The Easiest Way to Learn Human Anatomy

Back when I was studying medicine and physiology, I remember the frustration of having to read and re-read the same paragraphs in my textbooks. I certainly wasn’t doing it for fun. I was doing it because I needed to cram before a test the next day, and because my roommate was distracting me by talking on the phone in the next room. My scores ended up suffering -my parents were far from thrilled, and I was feeling pretty awful about it. The answers I needed were always just out of reach. I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it with my studies, so I had to look for an easier way to learn and remember human anatomy.

I was reading the university newspaper a week later and saw a letter that a fellow student had written in about audio mnemonics. I hadn’t heard of mnemonics before, so I did a quick Google search when I got back to my dorm. I had no idea there were memory aids out there for learning anatomy. That’s what a mnemonic is -a memorization aid. I decided to give them a go and listened to the audio mnemonics on my iPod before bed. It was the fist night of study that didn’t leave me feeling lost, because I actually remembered the information the next day, and didn’t need to refer to any notes (or write any!).

I went to my next lecture and the professor asked me to name the major retro peritoneal organs. For once, I wasn’t horrified. One of the mnemonics I’d learnt was “AC/DC Rocker Kids Party Down” (one of my favorites – I love AC/DC!) which helped me to remember the answer.

Mnemonics like that are the easiest way I have found to learn human anatomy. You can listen to them anywhere without distraction, on your iPod, iPhone, MP3 player or computer, and the idea behind them is to cut out the middle man (notes/text books) so you can talk anatomy right off the top of your head. More than worth a look if you are struggling like I was, or even if you just want to brush up on your knowledge.
