Alzheimer Disease’s Stage Pattern Development

Alzheimer disease, typically develops slowly and gradually decline in cognitive abilities (like memory, reasoning) affecting the brain functions including movements, language, behavior, abstract reasoning and judgment. Alzheimer disease could be from mild, moderate, moderately severe and severe Alzheimer’s disease or explained as stages falling in general division of early-stage, mid-stage and late-stage categories.

Experts have made a basic framework, stating the development of Alzheimer disease in its stage pattern of development. This framework is based on a system developed by Barry Reisberg, M.D., Clinical Director of the New York University School of Medicine’s Silberstein Aging and Dementia Research Center.

The stage pattern development of Alzheimer’s Disease provides for useful reference for how the disease may unfold and thus helping the family members for future aspect. Though developing of the Alzheimer disease may or may not happen according to the framework, their progress may not be at the same rate as people with Alzheimer disease die an average of four to six years after diagnosis. But Alzheimer disease can have duration varying from three to even prolonging till twenty years before killing the patient.

Stage 1: No impairment

The patient will be normally functioning like any other normal human being. This individual will experience no memory problems and thus the Alzheimer disease will not be evident to health care professional.

Stage 2: Very Mild Cognitive decline

Basically in this stage the person with Alzheimer disease will start having the basic symptoms of very mild cognitive decline like forgetting of glasses, memory lapse or loss especially of names or familiar word and locations. But these symptoms will basically be ignored or be termed as normal age related changes, whereas these are the early signs of Alzheimer disease. These symptoms again will not be evident to medical practitioner and even to family, friends or co workers.

Stage 3: Mild Cognitive decline

This is the stage when people living with the affected person recognize of him having some problem. This is the stage when Alzheimer disease can be diagnosed, yet all individuals suffering are not diagnosed in this stage. In this stage, patient suffers form problems with memory and concentration.

Basic symptoms of this stage are:

Difficulty in using word or names

Difficulty in ability to remember new names of person introduced

Performance issues in social and work settings

Reading difficulty as passage is little retained.

Losing and misplacing valuable object

Problem in planning and organizing

Stage 4: Moderate cognitive decline

A careful examination leads to the confirmation of person being suffering from Alzheimer disease. This is the mild stage of Alzheimer disease. As the patient starts experiencing:

Forgetting recent events or current occasions, at times they remember and at times they forget.

Impairment in mental arithmetic

Difficulty in doing complex task

Reduced memory of personal history

Feeling of solitude and isolation as affected individual feel subdued and withdrawn.

Stage 5: Moderate Severe cognitive decline

This is the alarming stage where basically family members should start putting on more attention to the patient. As the patient starts suffering from major gaps in memory and deficits in cognitive function. Assistance with day-to-day activities is now essential. Basically in this stage the individual will:

During a medical interview will be unable to recall important details like current address, their telephone number which thus is alarming fact that not to leave them to wander alone.

State of confusion: they express lots of confusion as why they are here, what were they doing and what date it is or even matter of fact what season it is.

Need help choosing proper clothing for the season or the occasion

Troubles with mental arithmetic; thus handling financial activity could be strain.

Though at this stage, it is not as sever as they usually retain important knowledge about themselves like knowing their own name and the names of their spouse or children.

At this stage they don’t require assistance with eating or using the toilet

Stage 6: Severe cognitive decline

The stage when the individual needs his family support to the maximum, as memory difficulties get severe and personality of the individual may even change and there is extensive need for care of the patient as customary daily activities also become a hassle for the patient.

The individual will have problems and symptoms like:

Lose most attentiveness of recent experiences and awareness of events as well as of their surroundings

Recollection of their personal history is imperfect, although generally recall their own name

At times forgetting the name of their spouse, primary caregiver though can generally distinguish familiar faces from unfamiliar faces

Need help with dressing properly as they may make errors like putting pajamas over daytime clothes, wearing winter clothes in summer or shoes on wrong feet

Experience disorder of their normal sleep/waking cycle

Need help even when going toileting, they may need help with flushing toilet, wiping and disposing of tissue properly.

Have increasing episodes of urinary or fecal incontinence

Experience considerable personality changes and showing off behavioral symptoms like suspiciousness and delusions. For example, they tend to believe that their caregiver is an impostor, may even have hallucinations i.e. seeing or hearing things that are not really there; or even suffer from compulsive and repetitive behaviors that can be hand-wringing or tissue shredding

Tend to go wandering and then become lost not knowing how they came there.

Stage 7: Very sever cognitive decline

This is the late stage of Alzheimer disease, the final in framework when the individual lose most of its abilities and his muscles and nerves starts degenerating and lose of weight is tremendous. This is the stage, where it is better to involve a nurse or put them in health care center, as the people who are living in with patient will feel very sad and their inability to help much will cause them pain.

Individual will:

Loose ability to respond to environment

Loose Ability to speak: losing capacity for recognizable speech though word or phrases may be uttered.

Loose Ability to control movement and reflexes: need help with even the basic activity like eating, and toileting. Loose ability to walk without assistance, as stage deteriorates; ability to sit without support will also go.

Loose smile: they will have no expression on their face, as they will not able to smile or even uphold their head. Reflexes become abnormal, swallowing impaired and muscles becoming rigid.

Memory Loss: What Is Usual And What Is Not

By Barney Garcia

According to the psychologists, we tend to forget the things that we actually want to forget. But this is not always the case. Sometimes we can not remember things that we ought to. Like the other day I was not being able to recall where I placed the duplicate key of the house. With clenched teeth and closed eyes I desperately kept on searching in my mind where I could possibly placed it for the utmost safekeeping when my younger daughter accidentally bumped on it behind a volume of Encyclopedia Britannica on the book shelf. And it was inevitably followed by a roll of laughter and joking comments on my poor ability to remember the mundane things.

Forgetfulness is often viewed in the light of fun in the movies, in the story books and in our social interactions. But it may not always be as innocent as you think it to be. Little incidences involving forgetfulness which we shake off by laughing over it may actually be the indication of some complex problems of loss of memory. So you should no longer neglect this problem if you feel it is taking a serious turn and address it adequately to know whether there is any disorder taking place in your brain. Here are some information that may help you to understand the relation between our brain and memory.

Our brain has this amazing ability to store information in different parts of our memory. Memory can be classified into short term, long term or recent memories. The brain can store the information for a long time. As for instance just dive down into the remote memory lane and you are sure to find out the pieces of pictures associated with your childhood days.

Now as you progress in your age, the pattern of information storage of your brain also starts changing and it gradually becomes more difficult to recall stored information. As you reach the age of twenty, your brain starts to lose some of its cells and the body also does not produce the chemicals needed for brain work in the same amount as before. These changes affect the ways how you remember the things and the older you are, the more they affect your memory. While the short-term and remote memories remain unaffected by aging, recent memories may sometime betray you. As for example, at certain age we often tend to forget names of people we’ve met recently. Well, do not get panicked, these are only normal changes.

However, there may be some other causes than aging that may cause memory loss and they include depression, brain injury, effects of alcohol, illnesses, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and side effects of drugs.

So how do you differentiate between a normal memory loss and serious one? Well, memory loss may be the cause of alarm when it significantly disrupts your daily life. Forgetting names or words are just fine, but you should take alarm if you forget such things as a recipe that you have tried many a times before, or can not recall how to get to a place that you frequently visit and so on.

Remember, serious problems related to memory loss get worse over a short time. So if you feel, you are suffering from some memory related problems that are not usual, see a doctor immediately.

Foods to Help You Enhance Your Memory

By Sharon Campbell

Are you struggling with some memory lapses nowadays? Have you been forgetting a lot of things lately? Your brain must be having an all-time low then. Have you been feeding it well? Or better yet, what have you been feeding your brain?

Your brain needs energy, an enormous amount of energy. The brain is the biggest energy hog in the body. You have to remember that the brain controls all the functions in the body. It is the one that sends signals to each part of the body on how to move. Therefore, it needs all the energy it can get to be able to function well.

But there really are times when that our brain needs a boost for it to work well. Here are some foods that can help with the brain function and enhance it power when it comes to memorization and remembering.

Of course, what can top the list but coffee? Coffee is rich in anti-oxidants and can give you a boost when you need it. This is because of the caffeine content of the coffee. A cup of coffee will give your short-term memory a fix. It can help improve attention and problem-solving skills. A cup of coffee is enough to get this momentary high. Do not overdo it though, as caffeine can tamper with your sleeping schedule.

For a long-term memory enhancement, eating blueberries is the best way to do it. Blueberries are rich in antioxidants that protect the brain from free-radical damage. The antioxidants can cut the risk of you having Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Have blueberries everyday and make it part of your diet. They are known to improve cognitive processing or thinking. If you can find wild blueberries then that is much better than the ordinary blueberries as these have more brain-boosting antioxidants than the latter. But if you cannot find any fresh blueberries available, frozen ones will serve as substitute. The frozen ones have kept all the vitamins and minerals intact and are much more nutritious than the available ones that did not ripen in season.

Salmons and mackerels are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These fats are the primary blocks of the tissues in the brain and will boost one’s thinking powers. These fats can only be found in fatty fishes so if you cannot find salmon or mackerel, any fatty fish will do. But remember that not all fats are equal so do not make the mistake of eating high-fat foods. Some high-fat foods contain saturated fats which are not good for the body and can clog up the blood vessels. So instead of getting the nutrients you need, you will never get them at all.

And for an improved concentration, drink peppermint tea. The scent can help you focus and keeps your mind alert. Studies show that peppermint makes people more alert and less anxious.

But nothing can beat a good night’s rest. Your brain needs to rest, too. If the brain is constantly tired, it will not function effectively and efficiently. A well-rested brain is the best brain there could ever be.

Improve Your Memory Through Reviews

By Mazliza Othman

One of the techniques that can be used to establish the habit of easily recalling our knowledge is review. Things stick in the mind by repetition. We learn our native tongue by hearing it over and over. We forget it when we cease to speak it. Missionaries and travelers lose their native tongue when they speak only a foreign one. Von Bulow, the eminent pianist, says: “When I neglect practice three days, the world notices a difference in my playing; two days, and my friends notice a difference; one day, and I notice a difference.

Repetition is essential to the preservation of our knowledge. Repetition gives also a deeper insight into the meaning of words and the spirit of a piece. A celebrated orator of this country said when he first read Mark Anthony’s Oration over Caesar, that it seemed tame, but successive readings made it a masterpiece and kindled every emotion of his soul.

Review is strongly recommended by the best educators, and by the intellectually great declared to be the key-note of success. Remember that the great secret of being successful and accurate as a student, next to Perseverance, is the constant habit of reviewing.

Watts, who is one of the best writers on memory, makes review indispensable. Downs, whose work on memory is justly celebrated, declares that review makes the mind wax to receive and marble to retain. Dr. Harper, a former president of the University of Chicago, and said to be the finest teacher of Hebrew in America, makes review a sine qua non of study. Each day he requires the student to review the lessons of the preceding day; besides, he requires weekly and monthly reviews. He declares there is no rapid advancement without review.

Thomas Jefferson was regularly in the habit of mentally reviewing and making analysis and abstracts of all he read. No day without verses committed, was the method of Roscoe Conkling.

Review is essential to progress and the retention of knowledge; the review is not merely that of repetition, but the conscious and sensible recalling of what we have learned and then comparing it with original sources. For instance, suppose we wish to review a lesson or book; we can do so by recalling what we know of the lesson or book, and then comparing what we remember with the lesson or book, or we can go direct to the lesson or book and review it by rereading it. The former is infinitely the better plan.

Many bright students readily commit and easily forget, and whenever they wish to use any knowledge they have once acquired, but forgotten, they consult a book. While some considered dull, and whose progress at first is not rapid, make permanent their acquisitions by oft recalling all that they can remember of their studies and books, and then comparing what they remember with the books themselves or with the original sources.

Try this exercise. Review nightly the events of the day. Take often a census of your mental and moral possessions. Review daily some book. Each day review the verses of the preceding day. The review should be wholly from memory. Each week the number of verses may be doubled or increased. The task at first should be small. The human mind as well as the body grows best by not straining it.

The habit of daily reviewing cannot be too highly commended. Review every book you read. See the connection between paragraph and paragraph, and chapter and chapter. At the end of every page and chapter, review. When you have closed the book, review. Make analysis and abstracts of the book.

Think as you read. Think while you read,– and think when you have closed the book. To think as you read, mentally picture what you read. Let faces glow before you. Let the form, features, dress and acts of individuals and scenes live before you. When you read the abstract, translate it into the concrete.

It may take time to read a book in this way, but it will pay. The thinking powers will be cultivated, the judgment will become more sensitive and the whole intellectual man be developed. There will be a pleasure and profit never before experienced. One good book properly read is worth a hasty reading of a score of other books. One book rightly read enables us to read more easily and more intelligently other books.
