Ancient wisdom tells us to eat fruit to stay healthy. Once again, science reaches the old adage. A new study suggests that compounds in fruit, especially apples, can promote the ability of the brain with age.

Specifically, researchers found that phenolic compounds, extracted from apples, bananas and oranges protected neuron-like cells die in a dish. But before entering the new results we will cover a little history on what fruits can do to protect your brain.

One of the things that can damage body tissues and cause disease is oxidative stress. This is essentially a process that usually occurs during the production of energy. Like a nuclear reactor makes the energy very efficiently, but also produces toxic byproducts, so make our fabrics.

Normally these toxins are well controlled, but sometimes beyond our cells and tissues and do some damage. If unchecked, this damage can accumulate and eventually lead to disease.

In new research, scientists from Korea and Cornell, extracted specific nutrients called phenols, apples, bananas and oranges and used to save the neuron-like cells cultured in a dish. Cells were treated with hydrogen peroxide, which causes oxidative stress and test whether the fruit extract could save the cells from damage and death.

Apples help neurons and blood vessels

First, researchers found damage to the protective membrane surrounding the cells to see whether the fruit extract could prevent emerging leaks caused by the toxic peroxide. Second, the researchers measured the actual peroxide-induced cell death and the ability of fruit phenols to save them.

It turned out that all the fruit extracts tested were effective in protecting membrane damage and cell death, but the apple extract was the most potent.

In a related experiment, researchers at the University of California at Davis, also tested the ability of apple extracts to prevent the cells die. However, in this experiment with endothelial cells, which are cells that form the walls of blood vessels.

Again, because the brain uses much of the oxygen supply of organs, the supply of blood through a healthy circulatory system is a huge factor. And the health of endothelial cells that make up the vascular system is extremely important for brain health and overall fitness.

In this experiment, apple extract met the challenge again. The researchers treated the endothelial cells in a dish with a toxin known to kill, and were able to prevent cell death with apple extract.

So there you have it. We remember all those things from our grandmother told us and pay attention. An apple day can really keep the doctor away and help maintain good brain function with age.
