Baddeley Working Memory Model
I really do not understand the Working Memory Model by Baddeley and Hitch (1974). anyone care to explain?
i’ve had a few lessons on it, though we really didn’t discuss it in much depth. i just totally don’t understand it, but i really need to be able to for my AS level exam. Can anyone out there explain how it works and what the different sections actually do, in a clear and understandable way please? i would ask my teacher for clarification, but she’s really confusing. :S
dsjoiners79 – well good for you, care to help then?
The Baddeley and Hitch working memory model (1974) replaced Atkinson and Shriffin’s (1968) multistore model of short term memory.
The working memory model is an information store which originally comprised of three components, however in 2000 Baddeley added a fourth component. These are:
1. The phonological loop – this stores phonological information, such as the sound of language and for example you can repeat your friend’s telephone number by continuously repeating it by continuously articulating its contents to prevent decay in your short term memory store. This is a slave system that along with the visuospatial sketchpad is co-ordinated by the central executive (see further below).
2. The visuospatial sketchpad stores visual and spatial information. It can be used, for example, for constructing and manipulating visual images, and for the representation of mental maps. The sketch pad can be further broken down into a visual subsystem (dealing with, for instance, shape, colour, and texture), and a spatial subsystem (dealing with location).
3. The central executive The central executive is, among other things, responsible for directing attention to relevant information, suppressing irrelevant information and inappropriate actions, and for coordinating cognitive processes when more than one task must be done at the same time.
4. Episodic buffer which holds representations that integrate phonological, visual, and spatial information, and possibly information not covered by the slave systems (e.g. musical information). So you can remember Britney Spears songs etc.
Good luck.
